We are animal lovers and try every day to save animals from the streets, and if at all possible, to find a home for them.Unfortunately in the past we had to release them after the veterinary treatment at various abandoned industrial sites or their original corner and then we brought them food on a daily base. Our resources were always very limited, we funded everything from our own pockets and actually we feed around a 100 dogs and cats in various locations….. Only very few veterinarians are able to work for free, some help us at half price. Veterinarians and veterinary students help us when we set up Vaccines -Day or Spay and Neuterdays, so we only have to pay the anesthetics, vaccines and other drugs and paraphernalia. We give lectures in schools on the new Animal Welfare Act and try to convince young people that animals suffer and that it is not right to mistreat animals. We are performing a “Adoptions – day” in various parts of town and try to find good homes for our protégés. We had a television program on a local TV channel, but it was not profitable enough for the channel and has been canceled. Extreme poverty and the dire financial situation in this country make it very hard for us to get donations. Thousands of dogs and cats living in the streets, feeding on garbage, are heavily infested with parasites, most of them sick, injured, show open wounds which ignite immediately and within a few days only bugs and worms. Merciless drivers make themselves the sport to hurt animals, by running over street crossing dogs and cats, on purpose. Horses are severely abused and mistreated, later exposed just at the roadside to die. Cats are skinned alive or beaten to death. There are people who think cats are associated with the devil. Every day we see new atrocities and can only helplessly shake our head and try to save as many as possible. That is our goal, but we need help to establish an animal shelter, and hope that there are other people who want to help us. We recently rented a place called VILLA MASCOTA on the borderline of Santo Domingo, but now we were forced to move out and actually we are in the process to purchase our own land to re-locate our animals, thanks to a outstanding iniciative from our germen friends on betterplace.org !! Also, the General Attorneys Office has offered a Finca, where we have the possiblity to take care of confiscated animals from their Animal Protection Unit! As that Department works without funding, we try to help and cure and treat those rescued animals also!! The Dominican Republic is a great holiday destination, but if you only stay “all inclusive” in hotels, you won’t see anything of the cruelty against animals in this country and especially on the streets of Santo Domingo. In this way we want to appeal to all people, please have a heart for animals and also we hope that you help us!! Thank you very much !!!
